Prime Minster Harper meets with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto

This evening, following the conclusion of the Pacific Alliance Summit in Cali, Colombia, Prime Minister Harper met with Mexican President Peña Nieto.

The Leaders had a wide ranging discussion including how pleased they are with the state of bilateral relations.

They also discussed the state of the global economy and major new trade and economic initiatives including the Pacific Alliance and the Trans Pacific Partnership. The Prime Minister commended the President for his and other members' leadership with the Pacific Alliance.

They Prime Minister and President also discussed cooperation in the North American context and ideas for further strengthening North American competitiveness.

Prime Minister Harper meets with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain

Prime Minister Stephen Harper met this afternoon with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain on the margins of the Pacific Alliance Summit in Cali, Colombia. Both Canada and Spain are observer to the Pacific Alliance.

In the meeting, the leaders discussed the global economy, the situation the eurozone and strategies for promoting growth and open markets. In this regard, they underlined the importance of concluding an ambitious Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union as an important means to boost investment and create jobs in Canada and Europe.

The two leaders also discussed pressing international security issues, most notably the crisis in Syria.

Prime Minister Harper meets with President Sebastián Piñera Echenique of Chile

Prime Minister Stephen Harper met today with Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of the Republic of Chile in Cali, Colombia on the margins of the Pacific Alliance Summit.

The discussion focussed on the progress of the Pacific Alliance, of which Chile is a founding member. The Prime Minister commended the President for his and other members' leadership with the initiative and indicated how pleased he was to attend his first Summit.

The Leaders also took time to review the agenda for the President's upcoming state visit to Canada on May 30 and 31. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of the growing Canada-Chile bilateral relationship and highlighted, in particular, the significance of trade and investment ties.

Prime Minister Harper met with United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron in London, England

Prime Minister Harper met with United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron tonight in London, England on the eve of the funeral of Baroness Thatcher.

The two leaders discussed the need to conclude an ambitious Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The CETA will broaden and deepen an already strong Canada-UK commercial relationship.

The leaders also discussed the global economy and pressing international security issues.

Prime Minister Harper offered his support for Prime Minister Cameron’s upcoming June G8 Summit to be held in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Harper call with Premier Li Keqiang of China

Prime Minister Harper spoke this morning with Premier Li Keqiang to congratulate him on his recent appointment.

The Leaders agreed on the importance of the Canada-China bilateral relationship.

They highlighted significant growth in trade and investment between the two countries. They also underlined the importance of maintaining a close dialogue on a full range of issues including bilateral economic cooperation, human rights and international security. In this context, Prime Minister Harper noted in particular the concerning situation in North Korea.

The Prime Minister concluded the call by reiterating an invitation to Premier Li to visit Canada at an early opportunity.

Prime Minister Harper met Premier Li Keqiang, then Vice-Premier, in Beijing during his official visit to China from February 7 to 11, 2012. During that visit, a Canada-China Joint Statement was issued.
