PM announces the appointment of five new senators

25 January 2013
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointments of Denise Batters, Lynn Beyak, Doug Black, Victor Oh and David Wells to the Senate. The appointments are effective immediately.

"I am pleased to announce the addition of five more notable Canadians to the Senate of Canada," said Prime Minister Harper. "All appointees are remarkable Canadians who have distinguished themselves in their respective pursuits."

Denise Batters fills a vacancy in Saskatchewan, Lynn Beyak and Victor Oh two vacancies in Ontario, Doug Black a vacancy in Alberta and David Wells a vacancy in Newfoundland and Labrador.

All new appointees have pledged to support the government in its efforts to make the Senate more democratic and accountable, including legislation to limit the term lengths of senators and encouraging the provinces and territories to hold a democratic process to select nominees for appointment to the Senate. Doug Black was selected by the people of Alberta in the Senate consultation process last spring. The new appointees also look forward to working towards a strong economic recovery and safer communities across the country.

"I look forward to working with these talented individuals in Parliament," added the Prime Minister. "Their collective experience and dedication are most welcome as our Government continues to work on addressing the needs and expectations of Canadians from coast to coast to coast."
