Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the death of Lincoln Alexander :

“I was deeply saddened this morning to hear of the passing of a truly great Canadian, former Ontario Lieutenant Governor and Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament Lincoln Alexander.

“Lincoln Alexander, the first black Member of Parliament and cabinet minister in Canada, is not only recognized for his many political achievements but also for his dedication to his community and the sacrifices he made for our country as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

“Lincoln’s legacy will live on through his family, through the schools and awards that bear his name and through the memories Canadians hold of his long record of distinguished public service.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I would like to offer his wife, Marni, the rest of his family and friends our deepest condolences.”
