Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Petro Poroshenko held a bilateral meeting today, following his inauguration as President of Ukraine.
Prime Minister Harper congratulated President Poroshenko on his first-round election victory on May 25, 2014.
The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, underlining their common opposition to the violence in Eastern Ukraine, and the violation of Ukraine's fundamental sovereignty and territorial integrity. Prime Minister Harper emphasized that Canada would not recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea.
Prime Minister Harper reiterated the actions that Canada is taking in support of the people of Ukraine as President Poroshenko assumes office and begins to address the political, economic and security challenges that Ukraine faces.
