The Honourable Konrad von Finckenstein

The Honourable Konrad von Finckenstein is a respected legal expert and public servant with extensive and diverse experience in law, policy, and communications.

Since September 2023, Mr. von Finckenstein has served as interim Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, seeking to prevent conflicts between private interests and the public duties of appointed and elected officials. Prior to this role, he worked in communications and competition issues and as an arbitrator of business disputes. He has served as Justice of the Federal Court, Commissioner of Competition, and Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, where he led important sector reforms in an era of rapid technological change. He was also one of the founders of the International Competition Network, serving as the Chairman of its Steering Group.

Earlier in his career, Mr. von Finckenstein held several leadership positions in Canada’s international trade policy. He was Chief Counsel at the federal government’s Trade Negotiation Office, where he was responsible for negotiating dispute settlement provisions under the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement. He also occupied Assistant Deputy Minister positions focusing on business law and the implementation of all legislation, regulations, and orders related to the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In 2022, Mr. von Finckenstein was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his distinguished career and tireless public service.

Mr. von Finckenstein holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Carleton University, where he has been a member of the Board of Governors, and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University.
