Gerald W. (Gerry) Kisoun

Gerald W. (Gerry) Kisoun is an Inuvialuit-Gwich’in Elder and the former Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.

Mr. Kisoun was born in the Mackenzie Delta and obtained his formal education in Inuvik. From 1971 to 1996, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), serving in Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik, Northwest Territories, as well as in Alberta and the Yukon. After retiring from the RCMP, he worked for 17 years with Parks Canada, within the Western Arctic Field Unit, where he was a valued liaison with local schools and a passionate advocate for students’ science and cultural heritage education. In 2011, Mr. Kisoun was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, a role in which he served until 2017.

Mr. Kisoun has served on various boards and committees, including the Northwest Territories Tourism Board, the Gwich’in Land and Water Board, the Gwich’in Land Use Planning Board, the RCMP Commanding Officers’ Indigenous Advisory Committee, and the Board of the Inuvik Community Corporation’s Elders Committee. He has also dedicated many volunteer hours over the years to the Muskrat Jamboree Committee and the Northern Games Society, most recently as its President and Chair.

In recognition of his contributions to the community and his public service, Mr. Kisoun was awarded the RCMP Long Service Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Polar Medal.

Mr. Kisoun lives in Inuvik. He has four grown children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
