Today, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, spoke with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to discuss the importance of the steel and aluminum industries to both the Canada and U.S. economies.

As a close ally of the United States, Canada is a safe and secure supplier of steel and aluminum to the United States and is part of the United States National Technology and Industrial Base related to National Defence.

Canada is the largest export market for American steel, buying more than any other country in the world and accounting for close to 50 per cent of U.S. steel exports. Canadian aluminum exports support more than 160,000 workers in the United States.

The Prime Minister and Senator McConnell also discussed the modernization of NAFTA.
