Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held calls with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson. They discussed Teck Resources Limited’s decision not to proceed with the proposed Frontier oil sands project in northern Alberta.
The Prime Minister and mayors agreed on the importance of Canada’s natural resource sector to our national, provincial, and local economies. They discussed their commitment to developing natural resources in a clean, sustainable, and responsible way, while creating jobs in communities across the country. They also agreed that all orders of government need to have a real plan for climate action if we want to continue to attract investors and stay competitive in the global economy.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government of Canada’s commitment to work collaboratively with Mayor Nenshi and Mayor Iveson to support their cities’ priorities for economic and social development, and with the resource sector to keep creating good jobs and clean, sustainable growth for Canadians.
