Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
The Prime Minister offered his condolences to Governor Newsom for the loss of life and devastation resulting from the wildfires throughout the state. The Governor thanked the Prime Minister for Canada’s ongoing firefighting assistance, including the deployment of 60 additional firefighters.
The Prime Minister and Governor Newsom exchanged views on their respective efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic’s health, social, and economic impacts.
They also discussed the importance of protecting the environment and fighting climate change, noting in particular its effects on more acute wildfire seasons.
The Prime Minister also raised the recent imposition of tariffs on U.S. imports of Canadian aluminum and noted that this action would result in higher prices for U.S. consumers and companies.
They agreed to continue to work closely together on the response to COVID-19 and the economic recovery.
