Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, on the margins of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The two leaders noted that 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Canada-Vietnam diplomatic relations and welcomed the long-standing people-to-people ties between our two countries.

The prime ministers exchanged perspectives on fighting climate change, promoting biodiversity, creating good jobs, and supporting economic growth for all, including through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and ongoing negotiations toward the Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Trudeau announced plans for a Team Canada Trade Mission to Vietnam in 2024.

Prime Minister Trudeau raised consular issues and the importance of advancing the promotion and protection of human rights. The two leaders also discussed their shared commitment to defending the rules-based international order and cooperating to foster a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Trudeau also reiterated Canada’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations members under the new Canada-ASEAN Strategic Partnership, and the broader region through Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.
