Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met today with United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to discuss the strong relationship between Canada and the United States and the important collaboration between the two countries on a wide range of issues, including international security and regional trade.

In particular, Prime Minister Trudeau and Secretary Tillerson had an exchange on the importance of a unified response to the threat posed by North Korea and also discussed the situation in Venezuela.  

The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State also discussed the importance of concluding negotiations on a modernized North American Free Trade Agreement, which benefits all three countries involved. They also exchanged views on US trade remedy actions concerning softwood lumber and aerospace.

In 2016, bilateral Canada-United States trade was valued at nearly $882 billion, with more than $2.4 billion worth of goods and services crossing the Canada-United States border every day. Canada is the top market for most states and nearly nine million American jobs depended on trade and investment with Canada.
