Today, the Prime Minister spoke on the telephone with the President of Madagascar, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, to express Canada’s support for a second term for Michaëlle Jean as Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie. President Rajaonarimampianina took note of Canada’s support for Ms. Jean’s candidacy and expressed his appreciation of her contributions to the Francophonie.

The two leaders also discussed the importance of promoting democracy and preserving democratic gains, and Prime Minister Trudeau welcomed the formation of a consensus government in Madagascar.

Both leaders also congratulated each other on the increasing economic cooperation between both countries.
