Prime Minister Trudeau's message on Vesak
Hello everyone.
And happy Vesak!
Today, Buddhists will commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha – the founder of Buddhism.
In Canada and around the world, Buddhists take this time to practice age old traditions, like visiting their local temples,
taking part in chanting and meditation rituals,
and offering gifts to show respect and gratitude for the Buddha and everything he represents.
Vesak is also an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on everything that Buddhists do to make our country stronger.
Whether you’re working as teachers, health care workers, activists, community leaders or in some other capacity, you are making our community better through your actions, large and small.
And you are showing us the true meaning of the values of generosity, compassion and altruism.
So, as you mark this sacred day, Canadians will be celebrating the strength of your culture, values, and traditions – and all that you’ve done for the Canada we share.
From my family to yours, Sophie and I wish you a joyous and peaceful Vesak.
Thank you.
