Prime Minister Carney’s message on International Women’s Day
More than 100 years ago, Agnes Macphail put a stake in the ground of Canada’s democracy.
She became the first woman elected to the House of Commons because she, like so many before her, believed our democracy is stronger when it reflects the people it serves.
Since then, women have served and led in all orders of government, including as Prime Minister.
Women won voting rights, property rights, reproductive rights, parental leave.
Because again and again, women have refused to accept a system that did not see you, hear you, or reflect you.
But progress isn’t guaranteed, and it isn’t linear.
Right now, we’re seeing women’s rights being rolled back around the world.
In Canada, women are still paid less on average, underrepresented in our institutions, and far more likely to face violence.
So on International Women’s Day, as we reflect how far we’ve come, we remain vigilant about what we must protect and we remain determined about accomplishing the work ahead.
That is our job as government, and as Canadians.
