The Prime Minister spoke today with Imran Khan, the newly elected Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his good wishes following Pakistan’s election and consequent transition from one civilian government to another. He acknowledged the very ambitious reform agenda articulated by Prime Minister Khan.
The two leaders reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Canada and Pakistan anchored on robust people-to-people ties. They spoke of values they share, including strong commitments to multiculturalism and to addressing the situation of refugees. The prime ministers emphasized the potential to deepen bilateral collaboration in order to increase economic growth and prosperity, and improve economic outcomes for citizens.
The prime ministers addressed regional and global issues of shared interest, including the situation in Myanmar, girls’ education, and the promotion of human rights.
The two leaders committed to work closely together, including to further strengthen Canada-Pakistan ties.
