Prime Minister delivers apology for the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War

The Prime Minister apologized to those who were interned, their families, and the Italian Canadian community for the pain and hardship they endured because of this historical injustice. He recognized Italian Canadians’ many contributions, including in business, arts and culture, science and technology, politics, and skilled professions, that have helped build our country, from coast to coast to coast. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a strong, diverse, and more inclusive Canada.

After Italy declared war against Canada in 1940, the Government of Canada interned hundreds of people of Italian heritage. In addition, tens of thousands of Italian Canadians were declared “enemy aliens”, and faced pain, hardship, and discrimination. The government’s policy went against the fundamental values Canada was fighting for during the Second World War.

The Prime Minister announces changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service:

Paul Ledwell, who served as Clerk of Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet and as Deputy Minister, Policy and Priorities, Government of Prince Edward Island until May 7, 2021, becomes Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs, effective May 25, 2021.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service:

Isabelle Mondou, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage, and Deputy Minister for the COVID-19 Response (Communications), Privy Council Office (on assignment), becomes Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage, effective May 3, 2021.
