Prime Minister concludes productive G7 Leaders’ meeting

The global COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the health and economic wellbeing of people both here in Canada, and around the world. To continue to keep our people safe and supported, and build back better in a way that creates jobs and economic growth, including through ambitious climate action, Canada will continue to work with our international partners to tackle the greatest challenges of our time.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today participated in a virtual meeting of the G7 Leaders and announced new funding to help beat the virus globally.

New firearms measures to combat crime and increase public safety

Gun violence has had devastating effects on communities across the country, and on too many Canadians who have lost loved ones. According to Statistics Canada, firearms were used in over 40 per cent of homicides in Canada in 2019. This violence must stop. This is why, last May, the Government of Canada banned over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms and some of their components. The government is continuing to take every step necessary to combat gun violence and keep Canadians and communities safe.

New public transit investments to build strong communities, fight climate change, and create new jobs across Canada

Investing in public transit infrastructure shortens commute times for families, creates good middle class jobs, grows our economy, and cuts air pollution. Since 2015, the Government of Canada has invested more than $13 billion in 1,300 public transit projects for communities across Canada. This is the largest public transit investment in Canadian history, and as we build back better from the global COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to make these smart investments that support Canadians.

New support to produce COVID-19 vaccines and treatments in Canada

Since the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada has worked quickly to strengthen and expand our capacity to manufacture safe and effective vaccines, treatments, and related supplies across the country. This includes investing in made-in-Canada projects to protect Canadians from COVID-19 and ensure our country is well-positioned to fight future pandemics here at home.

Prime Minister releases supplementary mandate letters for ministers

The global COVID-19 pandemic is the most serious public health crisis Canada has ever faced. It has had devastating impacts on the lives and livelihoods of Canadians, and has exposed fundamental gaps in our society. The Government of Canada will keep doing whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to have people’s backs during this difficult time. We will continue to support families and protect Canadians’ health and jobs as we work to build a stronger, more resilient country.
