Prime Minister announces intention to recommend the appointment of six new Senators

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that he will recommend, to the Governor General, the appointment of six new, independent Senators to fill vacancies in the Senate for Quebec.

In doing so, the Government is today taking further concrete steps to follow through on its commitment to improve the appointments process, and to restore public trust in a reformed Senate.

Prime Minister announces intention to recommend the appointment of nine new Senators

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that he will recommend, to the Governor General, the appointment of nine new, independent Senators to fill vacancies in the Senate for British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

In doing so, the Government is today taking further concrete steps to follow through on its commitment to improve the appointments process, and to restore public trust in a reformed Senate.

The Prime Minister announces changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service: 

Paul Glover, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Health, becomes President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, effective October 31, 2016.

Timothy Sargent, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Finance, becomes Deputy Minister for International Trade, effective October 24, 2016.

Governor General of Canada to visit the Middle East

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will travel to the Middle East – visiting Jordan, Israel and the West Bank – from October 29 to November 6, 2016.

The visit will focus on security, refugee resettlement, and development issues – as well as promoting stronger innovation and education ties with the region.

In Jordan, the Governor General will visit a refugee camp and the Queen Rania Teacher Academy.

Canada and France strengthen bilateral ties

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, welcomed the Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls, on his first official visit to Canada.

During the visit, the two leaders took concrete steps to strengthen the Franco-Canadian relationship, and agreed to deepen the already rich cultural ties between the two countries, work towards a safer world, and create the kind of economic growth that will help the middle class grow and prosper.

Prime Minister of France to visit Canada

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls, will travel to Canada for his first official visit to the country starting October 12th, 2016.

Canada is committed to deepening relations with France, building on the significant commercial, historical, and cultural ties both countries enjoy. This includes an unfailing commitment to promote the French language both at home and around the world.
