The Prime Minister announces changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service: 

Leslie MacLean, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, becomes Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Development and Chief Operating Officer for Service Canada, effective July 4, 2016.

Government of Canada to provide immediate support for Indigenous mental wellness

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced immediate and targeted mental wellness support for Indigenous communities. The Prime Minister made the announcement after meeting with youth from Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

Some Indigenous communities in Canada – particularly those located in rural, remote and isolated areas – are facing distressing mental health and suicide crises. These communities too often lack proper access to vital services and support, and the service offerings that do exist are not always culturally-appropriate or properly aligned with community needs.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the following changes in the senior ranks of the Public Service: 

Serge Dupont, currently Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and Associate Secretary to the Cabinet, will take on additional responsibilities as Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, effective June 23, 2016.

Marta Morgan, currently Associate Deputy Minister of Finance, becomes Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, effective June 27, 2016.

Prime Minister delivers formal Komagata Maru apology in House of Commons

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today delivered a formal statement of apology in the House of Commons for the Komagata Maru incident.

On May 23, 1914, a steamship arrived in Vancouver carrying 376 passengers who had hopes for a new life in Canada. After a long journey from India, the majority of the passengers – who were of Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu origin – were denied entry into Canada due to the laws in existence at the time.

Governor General of Canada to visit the United States

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will travel to the United States from May 24 to 31, 2016 – with stops in Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Denver.

During the visit, the Governor General will meet with business and political leaders, as well as with innovation, research, and academic partners to build upon the depth and diversity of Canada’s ties with the United States.  

Prime Minister announces changes to employment insurance for three additional EI economic regions

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced changes to provide extended Employment Insurance (EI) benefits in three other EI economic regions.

Prime Minister to travel to Japan for an official working visit and to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that he will travel to Japan to participate in the G7 Leaders’ Summit on May 26 and 27 in Ise-Shima. Prior to the Leaders’ Summit, and at the invitation of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister Trudeau will participate in an official working visit from May 23-25.   

Prime Minister announces action on Alberta wildfires

The Government of Canada will stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Fort McMurray in the wake of the devastating Northern Alberta wildfires.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the creation of a new ad hoc Cabinet committee to coordinate federal efforts to help the thousands of Canadians affected by the wildfires that raged through Northern Alberta in May of 2016.
